The urge to get rich quickly proved costly for 30-year-old Gursharan Singh — he was arrested by the Ludhiana police for sending threatening text messages to a woman.

“This man sent some 8-10 SMSs to Dr Harmeet Kaur — a resident of Model Town — demanding Rs 50 lakh in cash, failing which he threatened to kill her son,” said DCP Yurinder Singh.

The accused is the son of the driver who works for the doctor and her husband,

Dr Rajinderpal Singh Batra.

“We traced the number used by the accused. He used to send the SMSs from this number and then switch it off. But Gursharan made one mistake — he used this number once or twice to call other people as well. We traced those calls and tracked him down,” he added.

During interrogation,Gursharan told the police that he was unemployed and wanted to make some quick money. As the couple were financially well-off,the accused thought that they would not mind paying Rs 50 lakh for the life of their son, said the SCP.
