Heavy rains could not mar the enthusiasm of thousands of farmers who gathered here at the Punjab Agricultural University and Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University to be part of the two-day mela which opened on Tuesday.

Addressing farmers,after formally inaugurating the mela,PAU Vice-Chancellor Dr Manjit Singh Kang said diversification and food processing were necessary to augment the incomes of farmers. Emphasizing great concern for the environment and natural resources,Dr Kang pleaded the farmers not to burn their paddy straw in the fields.
Burning of paddy straw not only adds to the environmental pollution but also wastes valuable nutrients which otherwise can be used to enrich soil,he said,adding that burning of 1 tonne of paddy straw wastes 6 kg. of nitrogen,1 kg of phosphorus and 11 kg of potash. By burning 1.5 lakh tons of paddy straw,nutrients worth Rs.200 crores are burned every year. By adopting happy seeder technology these nutrients can be incorporated into soil to replenish it,he said. The V-C disclosed that Punjab Government is considering a plan to ban paddy straw burning through legislation.
The Vice-Chancellor also honoured seven progressive farmers for their excellence in farming.
Sukhdev Singh Bains of Shadipur in Jalandhar and Surinder Singh Dhatt of Barindpur in Kapurthala were honoured with Parvasi Bharti Award. Amarjit Singh Gill of Ferozepur and Gurmel Singh Gill of Sekha in Barnala were bounoured with S Dalip Singh Dhaliwal Memorial Prize for their excellence in diversification. Devinder Singh of Nakoder in Jalandhar was bestowed with Surjit Singh Dhillon Purskar. Gurbir Singh of Baba Bakala ( Amritsar ) was given S. Ujagar Singh Memorial Prize. A farm woman- Sukhminder Kaur-was awarded Sardarni Jagbir Kaur Memorial Award for her proficiency in net-house cultivation of vegetables. Besides,famous Punjabi singer-Surjit Bhullar and University teacher Dr. Virender Bhambota were honoured for their excellent services to the society.
Mela at GADVASU
Scientific methods are need of the hour to uplift the livestock professions and to improve the productivity. Vet university is always at the beck and call of livestock farmers. These views were expressed by Dr VK Taneja,Vice-Chancellor,while inaugurating the Pashu Palan Mela of Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University.
Dr KS Sandhu,Director Extension Education,revealed that a large number of people were interested in taking up goat,pig and fishery farming and especially enquired about their training programmes.
University publications on different subjects of livestock farming were also available. Farmers were very enthusiastic for registering their names for the forthcoming training programmes of the University as the farmers have started thinking that scientific information by experts is the only method to earn better profit. Dr VK Taneja released a book entitled Kandi Ilaqe Vich Pashu Palan written by Dr A L Saini,Dr H K Verma and Dr Jaswinder Singh.
