Acting on a complaint, three judges of Jagraon conducted a surprise raid on Wednesday morning at the Bakshikhana situated in local courts.
The judges comprising senior Judge Mandeep Kaur Bedi,Rajiv Vashisht and Ravinder Singh physically surveyed the condition of this Bakshikhana where undertrials are kept when the latter are brought to courts for hearing. It has been learnt that the Judges summoned the SDM,Mukand Singh to the spot. It has been leant that objections were raised on the civic condition of the Bakshikhana that has no provision of a washroom. Moreover, male and female undertrials are kept in the same Bakshikhana, which again is against the norms. Worse still,a bottle of liquor was found inside the Bakshikhana.
SDM Mukand Singh said,The civic condition of the Bakshikhana is our responsibility and we have begun our task. We have also ordered separate wings for keeping male and female undertrials. The law and order situation is under the SP,Headquarters.
The SP,Headquarters,Gurpreet Singh Toor, was also present on the spot when the checks were conducted. The SSP,Ludhiana rural,HS Chahal,in a press statement, released late in the evening, said that that a bottle with some liquid in it was found outside the Bakshikhana. A report of same has been lodged in bus stand police post and the nature of the liquid is being tested. The SSP has assured that action would be taken against police officials found guilty of allowing any illegal activity inside the Bakshikhana.
Interestingly, the complaint on the condition of Bakshikhana was lodged by a section of undertrials, who are facing trial for committing a fraud in a local bank. These undertrials had made a written representation to the Judge Mandeep Kaur Bedi,on December 24.
