Intoxicants worth Rs 2 lakh seized from Pindi Street

In another breakthrough in the crackdown on the illegal trade of psychotropic drugs,the Health department and anti-narcotic cell jointly conducted a raid on an unlicenced drug store in the Pindi street area of the city and seized a large cache of intoxicants.

Acting on information that one Pawan Kumar,who had been caught for the same offence previously,was running the trade of psychotropic drugs,officials with the two departments swooped on the store in the afternoon and recovered drugs worth over Rs 2 lakh,which were stored without any proper documentation.

The team which included district drug inspector Rajesh Suri and In-charge of Anti-Narcotic Cell Harjinder SIngh,seized 1,27,500 tablets,4,200 capsules,473 bottles of syrups and 149 injections. The owner of the store did not have any licence to run the store,the drug inspector said.

“We had caught the owner of the store,Pawan Kumar,earlier as well. We got to know that he resorted to committing the same malpractices and had stored psychotropic drugs,misused by the drug addicts as intoxicants,” Suri said.

The owner of the store did not have any licence nor did he possess any record of sale or purchase of drugs stored in his store,housed in shop number 24 at Sant Tower Pindi Street,the drug inspector added.

In the last one year,the Health department has conducted about a dozen raids on various defaulting stores in the Pindi Street of the city,which is known for a large number of chemist shops. The accused was booked under Section 18 (A) and 18 (C) of the Drug and Cosmetic Act.
