Three shops gutted in Books Market
Goods worth lakhs of rupees were gutted after a major fire broke out in the Books Market around 3.30 a m on Wednesday. It took 20 fire tenders three hours to douse the flames. The affected shops include godown of Capital Stationery,godown of Ishwon Electricals and BR Kaushal income tax consultant’s office.
The fire started from the first floor and spread to the third floor. The fire team said that they could not reach in the market early because of the narrow bylanes. None of the buildings had fire-fighting arrangements in place.

Three IPL bookies arrested: Police
The Ludhiana police have nabbed three persons from Delhi on the charges of betting on the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) tournament. Giving the details,Harinderjit Singh ADCP (crime) said,“We got a tip-off that the accused were operating in the city. We trailed them and found them in a rented house in the Flowerdale Colony in Dugri.” Those arrested include Gurcharan Singh and Manjeet Singh and their driver Subhash. The police have seized 17 mobile phones,one laptop and Rs 1 lakh from them. They have been booked under the Gambling Act.

PAU board member’s term extended
The term of Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) management board member Jang Bahadar Singh has been extended for another two years by the state governor through a notification,PAU Registrar Dr R K Mahey said on Wednesday. A former student of the university,Jang Bahadar Singh hails from Qadian village in Jalandhar and is a progressive potato grower.

PAU suspends classes for two hours
Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) Vice-Chancellor Dr M S Kang has announced that classes will remain suspended for two hours,from 10.30 am to 12.30 pm on Thursday for the felicitation function of Punjabi poet Dr Surjit Patar.

Book Week celebrated
Book Week is being celebrated at Ram Lal Bhasin Public School. The students took part with great enthusiasm in book review sessions. The first price was bagged by Piyush,who presented his review on the book ‘God Is Everywhere’. Principal Tarannum Fatma congratulated the winners and encouraged every child to read at least one book in a month.

Talent hunt competition organised
A talent hunt competition was organised for students of classes VII and VIII at BCM School on Wednesday. The function was divided into two categories – classroom events like calligraphy,fabric painting,cartoon making,landscaping,gift wrapping,origami and best out of waste and stage events like solo song and mono acting.

World Earth Day today
NGO Rising Youth Association held a seminar on the eve of World Earth Day at Haibowal on Wednesday. Dr Neeraj Bansal,an orthopaedic s specialist,said the first Earth Day,coordinated by Harvard law student Denis Hayes,was celebrated by over 20 million people. That Earth Day is credited with spearheading the modern environmental movement.
Members of the association — Preet Kamal Grewal,general secretary,Sandeeep Thapar,secretary,Vaneet Behal,advisor,and vice-president Prabhdeep Singh also spoke on the occasion.

Blood donation camp held
A blood donation camp was organised at Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University on Wednesday. The camp was organised in association with Salaam Zindagi foundation to mark the foundation day. S P Sangha,Controller of Examination,GADVASU inaugurated the camp.
He said that every year about 10 crores blood bags are needed for transfusions across the world the World Health Organisation (WHO) estimates that on an average each person will require one unit of blood for every fifty years of his/her existence. Around 110 people donated the blood which included faculty,Staff members and Students of the university.
