‘I’d ensure that young advocates are treated well by judicial officers’

After putting in over two decades in the legal profession,I am well-aware of the problems being faced by advocates.

Senior advocate Kamaljit Sharma was elected secretary of the Ludhiana District Bar Association on December 20 last year. He defeated his nearest rival by over 160 votes. Sharma talks about his plans which will help him serve the lawyers’ community better

* Tell us something about yourself?
After putting in over two decades in the legal profession,I am well-aware of the problems being faced by advocates. In past too,I have served the DBA,first as an executive member in 1991 and then as joint secretary in 1993. The lawyers,by electing me as DBA secretary,have placed a huge responsibility on my shoulders and I will try my best to live up to their expectations.

* What would be your priorities as DBA secretary?
The first and top-most priority would be to speed up the work on the construction of the lawyers’ chambers for young advocates,which is in process but has been delayed due to some reasons. I would personally take an interest to ensure that these chambers are completed soon and the young lawyers are able to take possession of their chambers.

* What you think are the other works that need to be done?
I think the DBA and the judicial premises need some basic civic facilities,like drinking water. I would try my best to provide the DBA members and even the litigants with safe drinking water. I will take up the matter in the DBA executive body meeting and will float the idea of installing water filters and purifies in the judicial complex so that everybody gets clean drinking water.

* DBA president Parupkar Singh Ghuman has already spoken about starting a campaign for wiping out corruption from the judiciary. What is your take on the matter?
The entire bar is united on this issue,which affects everybody. We are holding meetings about how to tackle corruption efficiently and plan to uproot this menace of corruption from the grassroot. We hope to succeed in our mission.

* Any other plans?
I would like to ensure that young advocates,especially freshers,are treated well by judicial officers. Sometimes,some judicial officers prefer senior lawyers over young advocates,due to which,they feel demoralised. We need to encourage youngsters and groom them as the future legal luminaries.
