Couple attempts suicide, hospitalised but stable

Couple was identified as Avtinder Singh, 24, a resident of Anandpura Mohalla, and his wife Gurpreet Kaur, 20.

A couple who had got married a few months back attempted suicide by consuming poison at their residence in Anandpura Mohalla in Basti Jodhewal area on Thursday.

The condition of both the victims was stated to be stable and they were admitted to the Civil Hospital.

The couple reportedly had a verbal spat following which the husband consumed phenyl. After sometime, his wife, too, consumed phenyl.

The couple was identified as Avtinder Singh, 24, a resident of Anandpura Mohalla, and his wife Gurpreet Kaur, 20.

Rani, mother of Avtinder, said his son had married Gurpreet after an affair but both regularly had fights and arguments. Rani said after Avtinder consumed phenyl, his wife too consumed phenyl after the couple had a terrible fight.

Doctors at the Civil Hospital said that Gurpreet and Avtinder would be kept under observation for 24 hours.

The Jodhewal Police reached the spot and recorded the family’s statement. Jodhewal SHO Harpal Singh said that no case had been registered as the victims were yet to record their statement.
