There’s a queue of brawny boys in tight tees that lead us to the always-impeccably-attired lady. This Friday afternoon,Maureen Wadia is also armed with a checklist and a stack of sheets. Slipping on her spectacles, she signals to the roomful of aspiring models to get in order. Regional selections for her Gladrags Megamodel and Manhunt are on and Wadias got quite a job on her hands.
Interestingly, this time round the president of Gladrags is keeping an eye out for pretty faces who can chip in as volunteers for her son Ness Wadias Kings XI Punjab cricket team in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
But I am not looking for cheerleaders who can hold pom-poms and romp around the stadium. Last season we had enough controversy with the foreign bunch, Wadia makes it clear.
Instead, she is looking to put together a handsome bunch of volunteers who will get to be a part of the IPL on close quarters. Imagine having access to celebrities, cricketers and at the same time getting to pitch in support for the Kings XI, Wadia spoke to the modelling hopefuls who had trooped in at Hotel Mountview for the Gladrags auditions on Friday.
While rumour mills have been working overtime, suggesting mom Maureen isnt too happy with son and Bombay Dyeing doyen Ness taking care of the IPL team with girlfriend Preity Zinta,it seems no longer the case.
I like cricket. The Twenty20 format has made us women take notice of the game. As far as other matters go,Ness tells me Mom,just chill,so currently I am in deep freeze! She clears the air.
Known for her zealous efforts to keep the family together, this Wadia is happy to pitch in with support off the field.
Internationally, summer jobs and short internships are the norm. I will be selecting smart volunteers for all the cities where the team will play, informs Wadia, mentioning suitable remuneration for the snazzy set.
As far as the strength goes, shes hoping to rope in 10 to 20 youngsters for each city. And it doesnt look she is going to have a tough time. I would love to sign up as a volunteer, said a wannabe model,Mohit Guglani, who has been lining up for Manhunt auditions for six years!
Now,heres a fresh start.
