A day after duststorm,city still without power

The duststorm continued to disrupt normal life in the city on the second day on Saturday.

The duststorm continued to disrupt normal life in the city on the second day on Saturday. A total of 250 electricity poles were damaged in the Ladhowal,Noorpur area on Friday night. Twenty transformers were also damaged,causing a loss of Rs 20 lakh to the state power corporation.

While the electricity supply in most of the areas has been restored,10 feeders near Ladhowal were still not working. Hundreds of houses and factories in the area were without electricity for the second day.

Officials at the electricity department indicated that they will be able to restore power by Sunday evening as the damage caused was huge. “The storm was strongest in this part of the city,so the damage has been maximum here,” said chief engineer P S Gill.

“We have also decided to prune the trees along the main lines across the city,starting next week,” said Gill.

I have already asked the chairman of the corporation and he has given permission for pruning. We do not want such damages in the future. The chairman will take up the matter with the chief forest conservator,he added.

Meanwhile,Gill claimed that the supply to rural areas had resumed on Saturday morning. In urban areas,the erratic power cuts continued.

Electricity supply remained disrupted for second day in Model Town Extn,B Block. Sarabha Nagar,E Block,was also without power since Saturday evening.

The staff at the electricity department was of no help,the residents complained.

Fire doused in 17 hours
The fire at Hemkunt Paper Mill which started at 1 pm on Friday afternoon was finally extinguished at 4.30 am on Saturday morning. The dust storm was one of the main reasons that delayed the fire-fighting process,said a staff member.
