Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Monday met Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) chairman V Narayanan and proposed the development of a dedicated satellite for the state for providing timely alerts related to lightning strikes.

During their meeting at the Chief Minister’s official residence in Lucknow, V Narayanan, who is also Secretary, Department of Space, briefed Adityanath on the progress and achievements made in the field of remote sensing, the state government said in an official statement.

The two discussed the potential use of remote sensing technologies in the state’s development.

Expressing serious concern over recurring loss of lives due to lightning strikes in UP, the Chief Minister suggested that a dedicated satellite for the state could provide timely alerts specifically related to lightning activity.

Narayanan shared that significant advancements have been made in areas such as weather forecasting, forest and green cover monitoring, groundwater profiling, mapping, and climate change analyses, the statement added.

The Chief Minister noted that an average 300 people lose their lives each year in the state due to lightning strikes. Therefore, cutting-edge satellite technologies could prove to be highly effective in mitigating disaster-related fatalities, he further said. The ISRO chief assured the CM that the matter would be taken up with due seriousness and that steps would be initiated to find a viable and timely solution.
