VHP plans nationwide stir to target Sonia Gandhi

The Vishwa Hindu Parishad is chalking out a strategy for a nationwide campaign up till 2014 targeting Congress president Sonia Gandhi.

The Vishwa Hindu Parishad is chalking out a strategy for a nationwide campaign up till 2014 targeting Congress president Sonia Gandhi. A five-day closed-door meeting of the top office bearers of the VHP is going on here at an ashram on the banks of the river Ganga in Chhatnag area of the city. The organisation will be taking up several issues during the campaign but the Congress president would remain the main target.

The Parishad would discuss among other things the recent police action against Baba Ramdev at Ramlila Ground in Delhi on June 5,the communal riots bill that is likely to be brought before the Parliament in the monsoon session and the save Ganga campaign.

The agitation of the organisation would involve taking out Jan Jagran raths and holding other programmes in the remotest areas of the nation, claimed sources.

Explaining the rationale behind specifically targeting Sonia Gandhi, sources said she ran the show at the Centre and must share responsibility for various acts of omission and commission that allowed rampant corruption. “It was at her instance the police took action Baba Ramdev,” said the source. VHP president Ashok Singhal, who is participating in the meeting, has already held Sonia Gandhi responsible for the June 5 incident.

The VHP may not hesitate in raking up the foreign-origin issue vis-à-vis Gandhi,if need be,sources indicated. “A lot of what is being done by the government at the Centre is at the behest of foreign agencies. And Sonia is the one in command at the Centre. So,we will have to talk about her,” said an office-bearer of the organisation who does not want to be named.

The VHP,sources maintained,is particularly peeved at the manner in which Baba Ramdev has been treated. When pointed out that Ramdev had denied any links with the RSS or other Sangh Parivar organisations, sources maintained the saints do not belong to any party. “The issues of black money and corruption, which he has raised, are valid. We support his cause. As it is,the saints should be treated with respect in this country,” said the source.

However, the organisation will not target Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who has been at the receiving end of the strong criticism from the BJP. The BJP,though not officially part of organisation’s anti-Sonia campaign, will be cooperating with the VHP and the RSS at the workers’ level.

The organisation apparently has not made up its mind on whether or not to target Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi, being projected as the future Prime Minister. They added, however, the campaign is aimed at bringing the change at the Centre in 2014 elections.

Apart from Singhal and S Gangaraju, who handles VHP’s foreign affairs, others participating in the meeting are VHP’s international general secretary Praveen Togadia,S Vedantam, head of the working committee and Madhur Bhai Kulkarni, senior RSS pracharak .
