A 16-YEAR-OLD girl who was rescued after she had gone missing earlier was found dead at a government-run centre in Etawah on Friday, officials said. No suicide note was found.

District Magistrate Avanish Rai has formed a three-member committee to investigate the death and directed it to submit a report within two days.

According to the police, a 21-year-old man — a relative of the girl — was booked for allegedly abducting her earlier. Her family was against their relationship, police said. After being traced, the girl had been taken to the centre on the directions of the Child Welfare Committee.

The police said they are examining CCTV footage from the centre and recording statements of the staff and three inmates.

After the post-mortem, the body was handed over to her family for final rites, said an officer.

Investigators said that a police team reached the shelter after the staff informed them about the body being found. The girl’s family arrived soon after and staged a protest, alleging foul play in connection with the death.

The girl was reported missing on February 23 after she did not return home from a market, police said. On learning that she was in contact with the youth, her father registered a case against him, alleging abduction.
