UP Nagar Nikay (Municipal) Election Result 2023 Highlights: The Bhartiya Janata Party swept the Uttar Pradesh local body polls as it won all 17 Mayor seats, and has a clear lead in Nagar Panchayat polls (544 seats) and Nagar Palika Parishad polls (199 seats). Hailing the party’s performance UP CM Yogi Adityanath said the public has given a mandate to the “good governance, development and fear-free environment” that was a result of the double engine guided by PM Modi. He said BJP has won more seats in all local body elections as compared to 2017.
(Fact: Out of 17 BJP Mayors, three have been elected for the second time in a row – Pramila Pandey from Kanpur, Vinod Agrawal from Moradabad, and Umesh Gautam from Bareilly)
The Samajwadi Party retained its place as the second-largest party, while the BSP finished third. Apart from the BJP, the BSP was the only party to have won Mayor seats in 2017 – from Aligarh and Meerut. The SP blamed the loss on alleged fake Aadhaar Cards issued by the government and claimed that people had not been able to vote. Akhilesh Yadav also demanded a recount in Gorakhpur.
The Nagar Nikay Chunav polls were held in two phases — on May 4 and May 11. According to Election Commission data, about 53 per cent of voters exercised their franchise, out of the total 4.32 crore who were eligible. Seventeen mayors and 1,401 corporators will be elected once the results are out. As many as 19 corporators have been elected unopposed. Shahjahanpur will elect its mayor for the first time this year as the city became a municipal corporation in 2018, a year after the last civil polls were held in the state.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said the BJP's victory in the Uttar Pradesh local body polls conveys people's support for the state's "unprecedented" development under Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's leadership.

Election Commission should take cognizance of the matter. Make sure there is a fair vote count," the party said on its twitter handle.

In his public appearances, Adityanath had kept his aim firmly on two targets – the criminals and mafiosos whose rule he said he had put an end to, and the Akhilesh Yadav-led Samajwadi Party.
