The Uttar Pradesh Government is now looking to combine its spiritual tourism industry with the wellness sector, inviting investors to develop wellness resorts across the state, particularly around popular spiritual destinations. To encourage investment, the government is offering a 30% capital subsidy, exemptions on stamp duty, waiver of land conversion and development charges, and also financial assistance for employees as per the existing Tourism Policy .

According to the officials, with increasing tourist footfall at popular spiritual destinations, the government aims to encourage longer stays and promote the state as a “wellness and spiritual rejuvenation hub”.

“Our focus is to combine Uttar Pradesh’s spiritual and cultural identity with modern wellness practices,” informed Tourism Minister Jaiveer Singh, adding that the state has “the potential to become a national hub for health and rejuvenation tourism”.

The proposals have been invited for wellness centres, which should have “a minimum of five therapy rooms providing specialised AYUSH-based therapies such as Ayurveda, Yoga, Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, and Homoeopathy” or “wellness resort”, for which the requirement is to have a set-up on minimum of “one acre of land with twenty rooms and dedicated therapy areas” providing specialised wellness facilities.

“These will be part of experience-based tourism… these wellness centres will be promoted not just as centres for physical healing but also mental peace and overall well-being, providing a mindful natural living experience,” explained an official.

The part of the plan is to integrate wellness tourism with spiritual destinations such as Varanasi, Ayodhya, Mathura-Vrindavan, Chitrakoot, Sarnath, Shravasti, and Kapilvastu. An International Yoga Conclave is being planned as an annual event in the state to promote the state not just across the country but also “globally as a wellness destination”, said an official.
