UP: FIR over videos on X ‘falsely linked to Kumbh’

The FIR was registered at the Kotwali Kumbh Mela police station, and legal proceedings have started, the officials saidAn FIR has been registered for falsely linking some videos which were being circulated on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj, police said.
At least 14 such accounts have been identified, they said.
An old video from Dhanbad, Jharkhand, was circulated falsely linking it to the Kumbh, officials said. The posts claimed that the “Yogi Adityanath government’s police were brutally beating devotees searching for their missing relatives in the Maha Kumbh”.
The police’s social media team found upon fact-checking that the video was related to Dhanbad where the local police conducted a lathi-charge on January 1. The administration said this was an attempt to malign the image of the state government and the police and also to incite public discord.
The FIR was registered at the Kotwali Kumbh Mela police station, and legal proceedings have started, the officials said. Efforts to identify and prosecute those responsible for circulating rumours on social media will continue, they added.
The action follows increased scrutiny of social media platforms under the directive of Uttar Pradesh Director General of Police Prashant Kumar, a government statement said.
“The state government has vowed to regularly monitor social media to prevent the spread of misleading content, particularly concerning large-scale events like Maha Kumb,” the statement read.
The administration warned that strict action will be taken against anyone spreading misleading information about the Maha Kumbh.
