‘Under house arrest’ for voicing Waqf Bill concerns: SP leader

Samajwadi Party (SP) national spokesperson Sumaiya Rana alleged that she has been placed under house arrest and that she received a notice from the Lucknow police directing her to “maintain peace” after she raised her voice against the Waqf Amendment Bill.

Rana (45), the daughter of late eminent poet Munawwar Rana, said she was also asked to furnish a personal bond of Rs 10 lakh along with two sureties of the same amount.

Speaking to The Indian Express, Sumaiya said, “Since I have been opposing the Waqf Amendment Bill, the police are trying to silence me by issuing the notice. I will challenge it in court.”

“I was earlier served a notice by the police, which I refused to accept. Later, they sent it to me through WhatsApp. I will challenge it in court,” said Rana, who is also national vice president of the party’s women’s wing.

The notice states that Rana’s activities could “potentially lead to a breach of peace and public disturbance”. She has been asked to “explain why a personal bond of Rs 10 lakh and two sureties of the same amount should not be taken from her for a period of one year to prevent such a situation and maintain public order”. She has been directed to appear before the authorities on Monday.

Sumaiya said she would comply with the directive and appear as scheduled on Monday and submit a personal bond.

A senior police official confirmed that the notice had been issued.
