THE KANPUR Police have arrested a transgender person for allegedly setting her partner’s car on fire, along with an associate, police said on Wednesday. The car was set on fire allegedly by Deep, who has undergone a sex reassignment surgery, and her friend Rohan Yadav. Both of them had reached Kanpur from Indore in Madhya Pradesh to meet Deep’s partner Vibhav Shukla (26), a resident of Kanpur.

Deep has alleged that she spent “considerable money” on the surgery and got it done after Vibhav promised to marry her and when he refused, the two from Indore set the car, belonging to Vibhav’s father, on fire.

In a statement, Kanpur Additional Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Harish Chander said, “Under the Chakeri police station limits, an SUV was parked inside the house. Some people came and set the car on fire and fled. A complaint was lodged, and a case was filed. During investigations, it was found that a youth named Vibhav Shukla is the son of the man who owned the car. Vibhav has a friend named Deep, who is from Indore. They met through Instagram, and entered into a relationship. Vibhav had apparently told Deep that if the latter underwent a sex reassignment surgery, he would marryhim. Deep claims that he did so and Vibhav refused to marry him.”

“A case has been registered in Indore too on the basis of a complaint from Deep, which is being probed. Deep and Vibhav have known each other for four-five years. In the case, Deep and Rohan Yadav have been booked. They have admitted to the crime and will be presented before a court. The reason for setting the car on fire was that Vibhav was apparently refusing to meet Deep and that is why he was angry,” added Chander.

Regarding allegations that Deep had given money to Vibhav in the name of marriage, the officer said, “That allegation is being looked into by the Indore police.”
