Syed Ahmed Bukhari’s son-in-law seeks cash relief for Hamirpur lynching victim’s kin

Umar Ali, who is also an MLC of the ruling Samajwadi Party, said he has sent a letter to Akhilesh and will soon meet him over the issue.

The son-in-law of Delhi Jama Masjid’s Imam Syed Ahmed Bukhari has urged Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav to provide “adequate financial help” to the family of Noman Akhtar, the youth from Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh who was lynched by a mob in Himachal Pradesh allegedly for smuggling cattle.

Umar Ali, who is also an MLC of the ruling Samajwadi Party, said he has sent a letter to Akhilesh and will soon meet him over the issue.

“I have written to the Chief Minister regarding financial help to Noman’s family. I have brought this to his knowledge. The family is poor and should be helped,” Umar Ali told The Indian Express.

He, however, has not specified any particular amount for the compensation.

“I have not been able to meet the CM but will be reaching Lucknow in two days and will take up the matter with him. No compensation amount has been mentioned (in the letter) but the family should receive help,” he added.

Umar Ali had unsuccessfully contested the 2012 Assembly polls from Behat Assembly seat in Saharanpur.

Another MLC of the ruling party, Ashu Malik, too, has demanded compensation for Noman’s family. “I will soon take up the issue with the CM and request for compensation,” he said.

Earlier, Malik had taken Dadri lynching victim Mohammad Akhlaq’s family to meet Akhilesh in Lucknow, following which CM had announced compensation of Rs 20 lakh, which was later raised to Rs 45 lakh.

Twenty-year-old Noman died of injuries after he and four others were beaten up by the locals in imachal Pradesh on October 17 on suspicion that they were smuggling cattle to Uttar Pradesh for slaughter.

The incident occurred days after 50-year-old Mohammad Akhlaq was lynched by a mob in Dadri over rumours that he and his family had stored and consumed beef.
