Police today claimed that the two men who were found shot dead along the boundary wall of Allahabad Degree College in Khuldabad area on July 31 had committed suicide.

Earlier, the police had registered a case of murder against five policemen, including a police post in-charge,following allegations that the two — Ajay Kesarwani and Suresh alias Paltu — were beaten up in police custody and shot dead by them. Ajay and Suresh had been named by one Sunny Pasi, arrested in connection with a theft case reported on July 30,as his accomplices.

Holding a press conference at the Khuldabad police station here, the police paraded three witnesses, including a young woman,to claim that Ajay was highly depressed after his name cropped up in the investigation and wanted to kill himself as he feared earning a bad reputation.

Responding to queries about how both Ajay and Suresh could have developed similar feelings and reached the same place at the same time,Senior Superintendent of Police (Allahabad) Mohit Agarwal said: “We need to investigate further. A few more witnesses will have to be examined. It appears as of now that it was a case of suicide.”
