Sub-inspector arrested for ‘assaulting trader to death’ during ‘late-night questioning’ in UP
The accused, Manikant Srivastava (50), was in charge of the Bandiya police outpost in Sitapur, Uttar Pradesh

A police sub-inspector has been arrested for allegedly assaulting a 26-year-old trader to death during a late-night roadside questioning on Tuesday. The accused, Sub-Inspector Manikant Srivastava (50), was in charge of the Bandiya police outpost in Sitapur at the time.
Circle Officer, Sitapur, Kapoor Kumar, said Srivastava has been arrested on charges of culpable homicide and sent to jail.
According to police, the victim, Satyapal Yadav, was taken to a hospital late Tuesday night with serious injuries and died the next day during treatment. His family alleged Srivastava assaulted him under the pretext of questioning him for roaming in the area at night. In protest, the family, along with friends and residents, blocked a road and demanded action. Senior officers later reached the spot and assured action.
An FIR has been registered against Srivastava and a police constable at Sidhauli police station under charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder. A preliminary inquiry revealed that, amid recent burglary reports in Sidhauli, police teams had been patrolling and questioning people in “suspicious circumstances”.
Station House Officer Balwant Shahi said Yadav was allegedly in an inebriated state and moving suspiciously when the police stopped him, after which Srivastava questioned him.
Later, the family and others rushed Yadav to hospital, where he died on Wednesday. The post-mortem showed injury marks, but as the cause of death could not be determined, viscera samples were preserved for forensic tests.
Yadav used to run a general merchant shop in the area.
