Aligarh Muslim University Vice-Chancellor (V-C) Professor P K Abdul Azis was taken amid high security from his official residence on the campus to a government guesthouse in the wee hours of Friday after students, who are demanding restoration of their union, blocked the entrance to his house. The students have been holding a dharna on the road in front of the V-Cs house since October 4. They had started a relay fast on October 13. Last night, around 12.30 am,over 150 students blocked the entrance of the V-Cs house. They are still there and not allowing anyone to enter, said AMU spokesperson Dr Rahat Abrar.
Apprehending violence, the district administration arranged for the V-C to stay in the Exhibition Guesthouse, around 4 km away from the campus. When the students blocked the entrance to his house, the V-C was in his office. He was safely taken to the guesthouse, he added.
The agitating students have said they would end their protest only when a date for the students union election was announced. The AMU Students Union was dissolved in 2007 with the approval of the executive council, following largescale arson in the university, said Abrar. The V-C has appealed to the students to resume classes, maintain peace and avoid bringing outsiders to the campus.
We have been staging a dharna in front of V-Cs house since October 4. The vice-chancellor passes us every day but never speaks to us. So,we have blocked the entrance of his house, said Mushtaq Ahmad,a student leading the dharna.
The students had invited Shahi Imam of Delhis Jama Masjid,Maulana Ahmed Bukhari,to deliver a speech on Friday, but he did not turn up. The Shahi Imam had confirmed his visit, but postponed it due to an urgent meeting. I spoke to him in the evening and he has promised to visit the campus very soon, said Ahmad.
