While the Samajwadi Party (SP) top brass may pat their back after the emphatic win, several SP stalwarts lost the election, indicating that the old horses of SP have lost their grip over the masses.
The glaring example is Ambika Choudhary from Phephna constituency in Ballia district. Ambika, who was the Chief Whip of SP in the assembly, lost by a margin of 7,387 votes to Upendra Tiwari of BJP. Interestingly, another Yadav candidate in same constituency Sangram Singh Yadav from little-known Suheldev Bhartiya Samaj Party polled 36,816 votes and was placed third. It clearly indicated that most Yadavs in the area preferred Sangram Singh Yadav. SP did fairly well in Ballia bagging five from total seven seats. Rasda was another seat where SPs Sanatan Pandey lost to Umashanker of BSP.
Another stalwart is national general secretary of SP,Ashok Bajpayee, who had to bite the dust in Sawaijpur in Hardoi district. In fact,Bajpayee was relegated to fourth place while the seat was won by Rajni Tiwari of BSP. The second position was bagged by Padmarag Singh Yadav of Kalyan Singhs Jan Kranti Party (Rashtravadi) followed by Kunwar Madhvendra Pratap of BJP. Bajpayee could get only 35,022 votes. Otherwise SP did well in Hardoi winning six from total eight seats. Again the core voters of SP,yadav did
not vouch for Bajpayee during elections.
Vishambher Prasad Nishad, who was appointed as national general secretary in 2011 and projected as partys Nishad face, was given ticket from Tindwari in Banda. But he lost to Congresss Daljeet Singh by 15,015 votes.
Shyama Charan Gupta lost from Manikpur in Chitrakoot district. Known as bidi tycoon,Gupta is known to be close the Mulayam family. He even managed support of slain dacoit Shivkumar alias Daduas family.
Another leader Baijnath Dubey also could not succeed from Katra Bazar in Gonda. All remaining six seats were won by SP but Dubey lost his election. In fact,Dubey was placed third while the seat was won by Bawan Singh of BJP with Masood Alam of BSP on second place.
