Shahi ‘quits’ as BJP chief,slams Yogi,Varun for loose talk

BJP state president Surya Pratap Shahi is learned to have resigned from the party post,taking responsibility for the party’s poor performance in the Assembly elections.

Shahi also held party MP Yogi Adityanath and Varun Gandhi responsible for damaging the party fortunes with their statements.

Sources said Shahi sent his resignation to BJP chief Nitin Gadkari Tuesday night,soon after the results were declared. The BJP won 47 seats,four down from its 2007 tally. Shahi was defeated in Pathardeva seat in Deoria by 4,554 votes.

Shahi refused comment on reports of his resignation. “I cannot say any thing about resignation. Being the state president,I have taken the responsibility for the party’s performance,” he told The Indian Express.

He said there were various factors that resulted in poor performance. “BJP took up the issue of religion-based quota but failed to cash in on it. Samajwadi Party utilised the opportunity and got Muslim votes by making rounds of Muslim clerics,” Shahi said.

Shahi criticised Gorakhpur MP Yogi Adityanath and Pilibhit MP Varun Gandhi for “damaging the party’s prospects” with their statements. Adtiyanath had first revolted against induction of former BSP minister Babu Singh Kushwaha and announced boycott of the party campaign outside his constituency Gorakhpur.

Recently Varun had reportedly said there were 55 candidates for CM’s post in BJP.
