Hours after the Samajwadi Party (SP) announced that a delegation would visit Sambhal on Tuesday to gather information about the violence that claimed four lives, the party alleged that two of its leaders – who are part of the delegation – were placed under house arrest.

The police, however, termed the move as a “precautionary measure” and added that the police personnel deployed outside the two leaders’ houses were soon withdrawn.

On Tuesday, the delegation led by Mata Prasad Pandey, Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Assembly, did not travel to Sambhal. Party leaders said that the visit was “deffered” following a request from the Director General of Police (DGP) Prashant Kumar, who assured them of an “impartial investigation” in the matter.

The delegation also includes Lal Bihari Yadav, Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Council; Javed Ali, Rajya Sabha MP; and Lok Sabha MPs Harinder Malik, Ruchi Vira, Zia Ur Rehman Barq, and Neeraj Maurya. Other members include MLAs Nawab Iqbal, Pinky Yadav and Kamal Akhtar, as well as Jaiveer Yadav, SP’s Moradabad district chief and Shivcharan Kashyap, the party’s Bareilly district president.

Two members of the delegation, Jaiveer Singh and Shivcharan Kashyap, claimed that “heavy police presence” was deployed outside their homes, “effectively placing them under house arrest”.

“Since Monday night, police force has been stationed outside my house, effectively putting me under house arrest. I wasn’t even allowed to visit the district party office, where a function was scheduled. Party workers gathered at my home, and we celebrated Samvidhan Divas there,” said Kashyap.

The Bareilly police confirmed that Kashyap was placed under house arrest in light of the Sambhal violence, but the police force has since been withdrawn. Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Manush Pareek stated that the action was a “precautionary measure.”

Jaiveer Singh claimed, “The police placed me under house arrest last night, but after my request, I was allowed to attend a function at the district party office under police security. I participated in the Samvidhan Divas celebration there.”

The Moradabad police also stated that the force was deployed as a precautionary measure based on directions from senior authorities to prevent him from traveling to Sambhal. The police presence has since been removed.
