Rahul in Rae Bareli: Karmabhoomi of my family… that’s why contesting from here’
Sonia Gandhi, who had been winning from Rae Bareli since 2004, is not contesting this time and has moved to Rajya Sabha.

Stating that his family has a 100-year-old connection with Rae Bareli, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Monday told the people of the constituency that he chose to contest from there as it is the “karmabhoomi” of his mother Sonia Gandhi and grandmother Indira Gandhi.
Addressing his first election rally in Rae Bareli since he filed his nominations two weeks ago, Rahul, referring to both Indira as well as Sonia as his mothers, said, “I have two mothers and this is the karma bhoomi of both of them. That is why I am contesting from here.”
Sonia, who had been winning from Rae Bareli since 2004, is not contesting this time and has moved to Rajya Sabha. Former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi too had represented Rae Bareli in Parliament. Five years ago, Rahul had lost from neighbouring Amethi Lok Sabha constituency, which he had won thrice, in 2004, 2009, and 2014.
Maintaining that the people of Rae Bareli taught politics to his great grandfather Jawahar Lal Nehru, who went on to become Prime Minister of the country, Rahul said the foundation of the country was laid by farmers of Rae Bareli. “Political relations are one thing, while family relations of love are another,” said Rahul, maintaining that his relation with Rae Bareli is that of family.
Accompanied by sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who is piloting his election campaign, Rahul addressed four rallies in the constituency where he hit out at the Prime Minister saying that unlike PM Narendra Modi who works in the “interest of Adani and Ambani”, his family has always worked for people of Rae Bareli.
Accusing Modi of working for businessmen, Rahul claimed that loans amounting to Rs 16 lakh crore, which is equal to 24 years of money allotted under the MGNREGA, have been waived for 22-25 top industrialists.
Alleging that most of the projects given to Rae Bareli, be the AIIMS, Spice Park or ITI, during the UPA government have been stalled, Rahul asked the crowd if they had seen the wedding of “Ambani” and lehenga worth crores of rupees.
Pointing out that the salary of the PM is Rs 2.5 lakh, Rahul asked the crowd to find out how come the Modi is changing clothes worth Rs 50,000 to Rs 1 lakh several times a day.
He also referred to the incident that took place at BJP leader Amit Shah’s rally a day before in Rae Bareli and alleged the journalist was beaten for asking the crowd how much money was paid to them to attend the BJP rally.
Priyanka praised her brother calling him the real leader. “Rahul is the real leader who will fight for your cause”.
