AMID THE standoff between the Centre and the state over the 10-wagon train that has arrived in Jhansi to distribute water in parched Bundelkhand, Congress president Sonia Gandhi has written to the Rae Bareli district magistrate, drawing his attention to the “dry canals” and “defunct hand-pumps” in her Lok Sabha constituency.
Referring to the water crisis being faced in parts of UP, Sonia has asked the district magistrate to prepare an action plan, considering that 2016-17 is the “year of water” for Rae Bareli.
Pointing out the “serious crises of water for both drinking and irrigation”, which has been brought to her notice “especially in Saraini, Shivgarh and Unchahar areas” of her constituency, Sonia has suggested re-boring and installation of water handpumps. She had added that her MPLAD funds could be used for the purpose.
While Sonia has asked for a plan for fluoride-affected regions, she has asked the DM to take the opinion of public representatives from the region in the next meeting of the District Vigilance and Monitoring Committee, headed by her.

“Over 13,000 water handpumps in the district have become defunct due to some reason or the other. Then there are 1,344 hamlets, where drinking water has high concentration of fluoride. These problems were placed before Sonia Gandhi during her recent visit, following which she has decided to intervene,” said Vinay Dwivedi, spokesperson of Rae Bareli District Congress Committee.
He added that a few days ago, Dheeraj Srivastava, Sonia’s personal secretary, had also visited the district and asked senior administrative officials to prepare an action plan.
“The district administration has assured that while handpumps will be repaired, mobile transformers will be used to operate tubewells at the block level. At the gram sabha level, solar-powered pumps will be used to supply water,” said Dwivedi.
