A 30-year-old principal of a school with classes up to eight was shot dead by two bike-borne assailants in the Lakdi Mandi locality of Uttar Pradesh’s Moradabad district on Tuesday morning.

The police said that Shabab Ul Hasan was walking to Sai Vidya Mandir when the assailants shot him in the head and escaped. He was rushed to a hospital but was declared dead there. His house is within 250 m from the school and he used to walk to work.

“Five police teams which include a Special Operation Group have been formed to track down the killers. One of the killers is clearly visible in available footage while the other was wearing a helmet. We are hopeful of arresting them soon,” said Satpal Antil, Senior Superintendent of Police, Moradabad.

Hasan was named in an FIR registered four months ago in connection with the suicide of a Class 5 student of his school. The 11-year-old boy’s mother alleged in her complaint that her son had killed himself after having been tortured in the school for not completing homework, the police said.

“We are investigating all angles but at present no clear motive could be established for his killing,” Antil said.

Hasan’s elder sister Mumtaz told the police the boy’s relatives had threatened her family members that they would have to face dire consequences for his death by suicide.

“My brother was not involved in the torture of the student and was falsely implicated by his family members. The police did not arrest Shabab Ul, which corroborates my point that my brother had no involvement in the suicide by that student,” Mumtaz told the police.
