Acting promptly on the 100 days road map of HRD Minister Kapil Sibal, the Lucknow University has sent a proposal of its first womens hostel worth Rs 9.18 crore for the economically weaker section. We needed such accommodation as none of the other five girls hostels were catering solely to the weaker section, said Professor AK Sengupta,Director,Planning and Development Board,Lucknow University. Among the occupants of the proposed new hostel, there will be candidates under various quota as well as minority communities, added Sengupta. We have proposed a four-storey building in three blocks each, consisting of 96-single-seater-rooms. A total of 288 girls will find accommodation in these hostels, said SN Dwivedi,Assistant Engineer,Department of Works. Once our proposal is approved by the UGC and the money is sanctioned,we can start the work immediately, said Dr Rajiv Manohar of Planning Board. We will need at least three months for its completion, said Dwivedi. The university has five hostels accommodating over 1,000 students. Apart from this, expansion work for 23 new single bedrooms in Kailash hostel is also going on. The university has received another Rs 1 crore under the 11th Five Year Plan for the construction of another womens hostel. With more and more number of girls qualifying and taking admissions in the university,it is necessary for us to provide accommodation so that they can comfortably pursue their studies here, said Sengupta.
