No terror angle in Agra blast: Cops

The Uttar Pradesh police on Monday ruled out the terrorist angle to the blast that took place at a hospital in Agra on Saturday. Special DGP (Law and Order) Brij Lal said neither the materials used nor the design of the device pointed to the involvement of terrorists.

According to preliminary investigation,the blast was caused by a crude device without a timer,or a detonator. The explosive materials were potassium chlorate,sulphur and charcoal,all of which are used in making firecrackers.

Brij Lal said the state’s investigating agencies,including the ATS,were working to track down those involved in making and planting the bomb at Jai Hospital.

A joint team of ATS and Agra police is questioning a suspect who was picked up from Iglas area of Aligarh district on Sunday evening. They tracked him down after studying mobile phone activity in the vicinity of Jai Hospital before the blast.

An ATS official said the youth had reached Agra on Saturday morning and was present in the area between 2 and 4 pm,before leaving the city around 5 pm.

The suspect,who runs a small electrical goods repairing shop at Iglas,told the police that he visited Agra to buy some electrical parts. The police are verifying his story.

Asked about the youth,Agra Range IG Pramod Kumar Tiwari said some suspects were being questioned. He also said that certain people associated with the hospital were under the scanner.
