Pointing out that Uttar Pradesh has been celebrating the birth anniversary of Chhatrapati Shahu Ji Maharaj on the wrong date — July 26 instead of June 26 — Governor Ram Naik on Tuesday asked Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav to change the date on all official records accordingly. He also sent a copy of the letter to Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati and Chhatrapati Shahu Ji Maharaj University, Kanpur.
“Governor Ram Naik has written to Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, informing him about the actual date of birth of Chhatrapathi Shahu Ji Maharaj as June 26, 1874 and expecting him to get it registered in the official records of the state as well so there is no confusion about his birth date in the future,” said the official spokesperson of Raj Bhavan on Tuesday.
The issue was brought to the knowledge of the Governor during an event organised at King George’s Medical University to mark the birth anniversary of the social reformer on July 26 this year.

Sources informed that later Governor Naik found out that even government records in the state are carrying the wrong date of birth of Shahu Ji Maharaj. Following this, Governor Naik wrote a letter to the Maharastra government seeking details of historical evidence in this regard.
The Governor House received a written reply by Maharashtra’s minister for Marathi language and Culture Vinod Tandave on December 15, which stated that in 2005, a committee consisting historians and writers was formed to find out the date of birth of Chhatrapati Shahu Ji Maharaj based on available documents.
On June 15, 2006, the committee zeroed in on June 26, 1874 as the actual date of birth of the Dalit reformer, the letter read.
