Teachers of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) have slammed Vice-Chancellor (V-C) Lt Gen (retd) Zameeruddin Shah for the allegedly fewer admissions given to children of the universitys teaching and administrative staff in the 2013-14 academic session.
The AMU Teachers Association (AMUTA) claimed that the number of AMU employees children given admission through nomination is far less than in the past. The association claimed that AMUs staff is not given its due share in the nomination category. Every organisation has special provision for its employees. Being an employee of AMU,our children should have been given preference in admission, said Aftab Ahmed, general secretary of AMUTA.
AMU has a provision where V-C has the power to nominate students for admission in various categories. This nomination category is restricted to 20 per cent of total admissions. There are nine categories the main being outstanding sportsperson, debator and dramatics, university employee categories, distant states, transfer of central government employee, wards of old boys. A merit list is made for each category. However, the V-C can change the number of admissions in each category.
The AMU administration refuted the allegations. The AMUTA claim is unjustified,as more than 50 per cent nominations were made in favour of children of employees. Only wards with abysmally low marks in the entrance tests were not admitted, the V-C said.
