Already delayed by more than one year, the new integrated passenger terminal building of Chaudhary Charan Singh (Amausi) Airport here is unlikely to be ready this year. Unhappy with the delay,Airports Authority of India (AAI) chairman V P Agrawal last week directed the airport authorities to complete the project by December-end but officials said the terminal cannot be completed before April next year.
Launched in January 2008,this Rs 129-crore project was to be completed by August 2009. More than 13 months after the deadline, only 77 per cent work has been completed. We will try to finish most of the work by December but the terminal will be ready for operations only by April, said K K Singh,General Manager (Projects),AAI.
Although contract of the project was awarded to Brahmaputra Infrastructure Limited (JV) in October 2007,land was made available in January 2008. Delay in cutting of trees at the site and later rain created hindrances in the work.
But the major reason behind the delay was deployment of inadequate manpower and slow pace of work despite repeated directives. Brahmaputra had received some contracts for the Commonwealth Games and they had deployed most of their manpower there. Now they are free from that work and should be able to expedite work here, Singh said.
The AAI has decided not to award any new project to Brahmputra Infrastructure Limited (JV) until it completes Lucknow airport project.
According to sources, the work related to installation of elevators and lifts, flooring, toilet finishing, false ceiling, roofing, fixing of lights, installation of conveyers belt and fixing fingers for aerobridges is underway. Only 50 per cent work has been completed at parking lot that will have capacity for 340 cars and 10 buses.
The new terminal building will be spread on 20,000 sq mt,of which 16,000 sq mt area will be for public. The building will have customer services on the ground floor, security check at the first floor and aerobridges also on the first floor.
Airport Director Atul Dixit said after the new terminal was ready, the work on remodelling of the existing terminal will begin.
Initially, both international and domestic flights will operate from the new terminal building. When the remodeling of the existing building is completed, operation of domestic flights will be shifted there.
