A sub-inspector (S-I) and two others were injured when a mob, protesting alleged police protection to an accused in a case of a girls murder, attacked a police outpost in Bela police station area of Auraiya district today.
The protesters damaged the outpost and the motorcycles of the policemen. To control the situation, the police resorted to cane-charged in which two locals were injured.
The mob was led by Aslam, father of the 11-year-old girl Chanda who was assaulted and later was set on fire, causing her death on Tuesday. The victims father had alleged rape, but the postmortem report ruled out rape or its attempt.
Auraiya ASP Amrendra Prasad Singh said the mob gathered at the Yaqubpur police outpost and blocked the Bidhuna-Kanpur Road, demanding transfer of the outpost in-charge S-I RK Kaushal. Aslam alleged that Kaushal was protecting one of accused,Chhotey, who roamed free in the village.
As the S-I tried to pacify the locals, they manhandled him and vandalised the outpost. In a bid to escape the mob fury,Kaushal fired in the air with his service pistol. But the people overpowered and beat him up. Somehow,he managed to escape from the place. The ASP rushed to the place with reinforcements and dispersed the mob.
Singh said violence was meant to exert pressure on the police. Aslam and his associates had vandalised the house of one Bahauddin, the main accused in the murder case,on Wednesday evening. The S-I had visited the village later and had warned that action would be initiated against those found involved in the vandalism, the ASP said.
He said the police had arrested five people in the murder case the day the incident took place, but Chhotey is yet to be arrested. Aslam had alleged in the complaint that his daughter was raped by Bahauddin and later was burnt to death to conceal the crime.
