A 21-year-old girl, who had run away from her home in Mumbai and was being held captive by a sadhu at a temple at Meja in Allahabad’s Trans-Yamuna area, was rescued on Wednesday evening.

A 21-year-old girl, who had run away from her home in Mumbai and was being held captive by a sadhu at a temple at Meja in Allahabad’s Trans-Yamuna area, was rescued on Wednesday evening.

Some villagers beat up the sadhu after he was found in an objectionable position with the girl. Later, they were handed him to the police.

During interrogation,Sankata Prashad — a resident of Gigna in Mirzapur district — told the police that he had found the girl loitering at the Allahabad Junction on April 11. Promising that he would take her to Mumbai,Prashad took her to the temple, where he raped her several times. On Wednesday evening,Prashad was again trying to force herself on the girl when he was caught by the villagers.

On Thursday, the girl’s medical examination confirmed rape. Prashad was produced before a court, which remanded him in judicial custody till April 28. The girl, who appears to be mentally-challenged,is being kept at the Mahila police station. “Her behaviour is erratic. One moment she is laughing, the next she starts crying,” said an officer.

The girl, who is illiterate and seems to belong to a poor family, has told the police that she had run away from her home in Mumbai’s Kurla area.

Though she could not give her address, she told the police that her father is a factory worker. “It is yet to be ascertained whether she lost her mental balance due to sexual abuse,or she had been suffering from it before she met the sadhu,” said DIG B B Sharma. The Mumbai police have been contacted to help find her parents,he added.
