On Sunday, when the boy did not return home, his parents went to their ancestral house, located about 4 km from their rented accommodation. Upon reaching there, they found the house ransacked and the almirah lock was broken. They found cash and jewellery missing.
Police in Kanpur detained a minor boy for allegedly stealing Rs 21 lakh in cash and jewellery from his house. The Class X student had been missing since the valuables disappeared, police said.
The theft came to light when the family returned to their ancestral home, where the cash and jewellery were kept.
Police have also arrested five friends of the boy, all local residents, and recovered Rs 3.98 lakh in cash and some jewellery from them, an officer said.
The family estimates the jewellery’s value to be several lakhs.
“The exact details of the incident will be clear after questioning,” the officer added.
According to police, the boy’s father said his son had fallen into bad company, prompting the family to shift to a rented house. The ancestral house was locked, and the businessman used to visit it every other day. His son also had a key to the house.

When the businessman inquired, a neighbor told him that they had seen his son and a friend outside the house the previous night. He searched for his son but was unable to find him.
Later, the businessman got an FIR registered against his minor son and his six friends.
