A 55-year-old man and his 35-year-old nephew were shot dead by six to seven men in a village in Uttar Pradesh’s Bareilly district on Thursday morning, the police said, adding that initial investigations had revealed that the double murder was a fallout of a rivalry between two families.

The incident took place in Dharampur village and the police identified the deceased as Daulat Khan and his nephew Raees Khan. The duo were on their way to their agriculture property when the accused, riding three motorcycles, allegedly intercepted them and opened fire, the police said. Daulat and Raees died on the spot.

“We have learnt that Daulat Khan had an old rivalry with the family members of Nanhe Mistry, whom he had killed seven years ago following a row in the village. Two people have been taken into custody…arrests are likely to be made soon,” said Anurag Arya, Senior Superintendent of Police, Bareilly.

Mistry was murdered in 2018 and Khan was one of the accused in the case. Members of the two families frequently engaged in fights with each other, the police said.

Harendra Singh, the Station House Officer of the jurisdictional Fareedpur police station, said that Daulat was arrested and released on bail last year in the Mistry murder case. “The accused who wanted to take revenge were looking for him since he came out of jail. Today, they murdered him along with his nephew,” Singh said.
