Man in UP’s Unnao dies, family says was thrashed by Holi revellers; probe on
The post-mortem report, however, cited heart failure as the cause of death, police said, adding that no injury marks were found on the body

THE UNNAO police are investigating the death of a man whose family has alleged that he was assaulted after he objected to being forcibly smeared with colour during Holi.
The man, Mohammad Sharif, 53, was on his way home on Friday when the alleged incident occurred, according to the family. The police, however, said that the post-mortem report cited “heart failure” as the cause of death and no injury marks were found on the body. Deepak Bhukar, Superintendent of Police, Unnao, said, “We are examining the case from all angles and looking into the allegations made by the deceased man’s family.”
According to a police officer, the family has named four people in the First Information Report (FIR), registered on charges of culpable homicide, at Kotwali police station. No arrests have been made yet.
The police said that on the day he died, Sharif arrived in an autorickshaw and was walking to his house in the Kotwali area when a group, including some boys, allegedly stopped him and attempted to forcibly apply colours on him.
Pramod Kumar Mishra, Station House Officer, Kotwali police station, said the man’s family claimed that a heated argument ensued, after which the accused assaulted him and repeatedly slapped the man, leading to his death.
On Sunday, All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) president Asaduddin Owaisi took to X and alleged that Unnao resident Sharif was beaten to death. “He objected to being forcibly smeared with colour. My prayers are with his family. They are not only grieving their loss but also struggling against the police’s lies,” he said.
“The police want to close the case by calling it a heart attack, not a murder. This incident did not happen because Holi and Friday fell on the same day; it happened because every mob now knows they have the protection of the police and administration,” the Lok Sabha MP from Hyderabad alleged.
