A 25-YEAR-OLD man was found dead at the official residence of BJP MLA Yogesh Shukla in the Hazratganj area of Lucknow on Monday, police said. The body was found hanging from a ceiling fan in the apartment, police said, adding that no suicide note had been recovered yet.

The police identified the victim as Shreshta Tiwari, a member of the media team associated with Shukla. Tiwari hailed from Haidergarh area of Barabanki district and had been working with Yogesh Shukla, MLA from Bakshi Ka Talab in Lucknow, for the last one-and-a-half-years.

No one else apart from Tiwari was present in the flat at the time of the incident, police said.

According to the police, on Saturday night, they got a call from the control room about an alleged “suicide attempt” by a man at the MLA’s residence.

“A police team reached the spot and found that the door of the apartment was locked from inside. After getting no response despite several knocks, the police broke open the door and found the body. It was sent for an autopsy,” a police officer said. There was no one else in the house then, the officer added.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (Lucknow) Arvind Kumar Verma said the motive behind the death is yet to be ascertained and a probe was on. Tiwari’s family has been informed, he said.

The police have recovered Tiwari’s phone from the spot.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Lucknow), Aparna Rajat Kaushik said a field unit team collected evidence from the spot.

When contacted, MLA Yogesh Shukla said Tiwari, who he termed as “energetic”, had been in charge of his media cell. “Tiwari was with me till 4 pm on Saturday,” he said over phone.

Shukla added that on Saturday night, he was informed that his apartment door was locked from inside and there was no response to knocks. “No one told me that he (Tiwari) had taken the extreme step,” he said. The MLA claimed that he reached the spot soon after being informed and said some of Tiwari’s associates gathered outside the apartment by then.

“No one was present inside the apartment when the police broke open the door. I was unable to go to my flat for the past three days because of my busy schedule,” said Shukla.
