Magisterial inquiry into May 13 encounter by UP police in Lucknow

A magisterial inquiry was Thursday ordered into a May 13 encounter in which a criminal was injured in Kakori area here, an official said here. Sub-divisional Magistrate, Sarojini Nagar, Chandan Patel ordered the probe into the encounter in which one Shubhkaran was injured, District Magistrate Kaushalraj Sharma said.

A team of policemen and crime branch surveillance cell had claimed to have arrested Shubhkaran, who carried a reward of Rs 25,000, and his two aides following an encounter at Kaliyakheda in Kakori area. The criminal, identified as Subhkaran aka Karan Yadav, suffered leg injuries in the exchange of fire. He was later taken to a hospital.

Subhkaran’s two accomplices, identified as Virendra Lal and Sanjay Shukla, were also arrested while another one, identified as Gurpreet, managed to escape. Police had said that Subhkaran was named in the murder case of Raj Bahadur, a property dealer, in June 2015 in Lucknow and was also involved in a loot of Rs 2 lakh in 2017 and several other cases.

Some NGOs had questioned the police claims on the encounter and had termed it “fake”. SDM Patel said that anyone who wanted to give any detail, information or proof regarding the matter could give their statement by October 30. In 2014, the Supreme Court had framed a slew of guidelines including mandatory magisterial inquiry into encounter killings.
