Andarwale vs Baharwale
A group of Congressmen sitting outside the media centre at the party headquarters have become a regular feature lately. They pass time discussing anything under the sun, including the goings-on in the party. Inside the building sit the state Congress office-bearers who take care of the official party work. Spend some time there and it becomes clear that neither group much likes the other. In fact, the dividing line is so obvious that everyone calls those sitting inside as andarwale and those sitting outside as baharwale. Anyone unhappy with the andarwalas for any reason joins the baharwalas and gives vent to his anger, and vice-versa. Requests for information may elicit replies like: “Yeh information to apko bahar se hi mil payegi” or “Iske bare mein to andarwalon se puchiye”. No prizes for guessing who are andarwalas and who are baharwalas.

Maya warning to MLAs
It is bad news for BSP legislators. Chief Minister Mayawati is unhappy over reports of infighting among party MLAs in some districts. At a meeting last week, she gave a warning: stop infighting or you will lose the party ticket. She asked party coordinators to keep a close watch on such activities and advised the MLAs to better concentrate on their constituencies. Specifically, she named Bulandshahr and Bareilly districts. For the MLAs,the sudden change in the chief minister’s attitude is difficult to understand. After the BSP’s poor performance in the Lok Sabha elections, she had mellowed down and become polite in her dealing with party MLAs. Since then, this is the first time when she has held out a warning. The MLAs are trying to figure out the reason behind Behenji’s mood swing.

No post for ex-Rampur SP
Earlier this month, the state government posted Ramit Sharma as SP of Rampur in place of Jyoti Narayan. Nothing unusual, except that Narayan was not given a posting. Even now,one fortnight after he was removed,Narayan remains in Rampur, doing nothing and unaware of his next assignment. Officials say he has not even been kept on wait. Since he has no option,he continues to stay in the official residence of SP,which has led to an embarrassing situation both for him and his successor. Such treatment of any officer is bad. In Narayan’s case,it has become a talking point among IPS officers because he has a reputation for honesty and integrity. It is also a bad advertisement for the government.

Exam heat
Examinations are a testing time not only for students, but also for parents. In fact,it is a bigger deal for parents, claimed Rajesh Tiwari — a state government employee who moved the Allahabad High Court praying that he should not be transferred till the Board examinations of his son were over. Posted at the Trade Tax Department in Noida,Tiwari pleaded before the court that if he was forced to join at Balrampur, where he had been transferred,it may affect the performance of his son — who is a Class XII student — in the Board exams. A Bench of Justices Uma Nath Singh and Devendra Kumar Arora understood Tiwari’s predicament and ordered the government to stay his transfer for four months.

Lacklustre hockey
Hockey lovers feel that the All India K D Singh ‘Babu’ Memorial Invitation Hockey Tournament — an important national event — has been mistimed this year. The tournament will be held here from February 18 to 24. Since the World Cup starts in New Delhi on February 28,the top players — who form the national squad — will not be seen in action in Lucknow. Even second-line players will not be there, busy as they will be playing practice matches with the national team. Olympian Sujeet Kumar said the star-studded Air India team, which was runner-up last year,is not coming at all.
