Lucknow trader, worker shot in shop outside police outpost

The protest was called off after traders were assured that the culprits would be arrested in the next 48 hours.

A trader and his worker were shot in broad daylight after the former was robbed of his gold chain from inside his crockery shop in the Old City’s busy Chowk area on Thursday.

Outraged by the robbery and murders in the day with the police outpost right in front of the shop, the traders held a demonstration by blocking the main road at Rumi Gate. The protest was called off after traders were assured that the culprits would be arrested in the next 48 hours.

Family members of the trader, identified as Amit Dulani, 34, said two persons came on a motorcycle at the shop located in the ground floor of the house. One of them entered inside the shop and snatched the gold chain from Dulani’s neck, while he was sitting at the counter.

“Amit resisted the bid but was shot by the robber with a pistol. When our worker Dashrath went there to catch the robber, he was also shot. The robber then escaped with the chain,” said Amit’s father Srichand Dulani.

Police said the worker, Dashrath, 20, suffered a bullet injury in his head while Amit was shot on his chest. Dashrath died on the spot while Amit died on the way to the trauma centre, said Additional SP(West) Ajay Kumar said .

“Family members have not told anything about any enmity till now. Gold chain is the only thing robbed from there. For now, it is being investigated as a case of robbery and murder,” said Kumar.

Amit ran the wholesale and retail crockery shop at Lajpat Nagar Chowk. Dashrath, a resident of Badaiyan village in Maal area, had been working there as a helper and used to stay at a rented accommodation in the old city with his mother and three sisters.

“The murders have taken place in front of a police outpost. We have given the police 48 hours to arrest the culprits and compensate the family. If they fail to do so, we will not only close the whole Lucknow but also hold a protest at the Chowk roundabout,” said Raj Kumar Verma, vice-president of Lucknow Vyapar Mandal.
