UP govt approves Rs 1 cr for amenities at Lucknow’s Digambar Jain Temple

The area surrounding the temple to be redesigned with wider roads, new lighting, proper sanitation, drinking water facilities among others

The UP government has approved Rs 1 crore for the development of amenities at Digambar Jain Temple in Indranagar area of Lucknow. Officials said it was a part of an attempt to strengthen “Jain Heritage” in the state capital, while special infrastructural development would be undertaken around the Digambar Jain Temple.

“The project has been cleared under the Chief Minister’s Tourism Development Scheme,” said an official, adding that the aim is to provide an experience to thousands of devotees who visit these centers of Jain faith.

Officials said that while the Jain temple in the Ashiyana area of Lucknow houses about a thousand-year-old idol of Lord Mahavir, the Indira Nagar temple houses an about 800-year-old handwritten Jain manuscript.

As part of the project, the area surrounding the temple would be redesigned with wider roads, new lighting, proper sanitation, drinking water facilities, clear signage, as well as seating areas, parking arrangements, and would also have a dedicated information kiosk.

Officials said that the latest plan is in line with the government’s efforts to develop locations within the Jain tourism circuit. “The idea is to ensure that the project also supports local employment, encourages small businesses near the temple area, and turns it into a significant place for religious tourism,” said an official.
