Kanpur Demolition | Arrogance of power: Rahul, Akhilesh slam BJP govt in UP
On Tuesday, Rahul Gandhi tweeted, “When the arrogance of power takes away the people’s right to live, it is called dictatorship. My mind is disturbed by the incident in Kanpur.”

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and Samajwadi Party president on Tuesday slammed the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over an incident in which a 46-year-old woman and her daughter allegedly immolated themselves during an anti-encroachment drive in Kanpur district.
In a Twitter post on Tuesday, Rahul Gandhi said, “When the arrogance of power takes away the people’s right to live, it is called dictatorship. My mind is disturbed by the incident in Kanpur.”
“This ‘bulldozer policy’ has become the face of cruelty of this government. India does not accept this,” the former Congress president said.
In a tweet, Samajawadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav said the whole of Uttar Pradesh is facing injustices at the hands of the BJP government. “The arrogance of power has burnt alive a family. Not just Kanpur Dehat, or Kanpur Nagar, the whole of UP is facing injustices of the BJP government,” he said.
The Samajwadi Party wrote on its official Twitter handle, “The deceased person’s is naming officials and saying that they are responsible. When will you send these officials to jail after booking them under sections for murder, conspiracy to murder, intimidation? Since the new Commissioner has come, collection like Noida and he is involved in land trade.”

The SP also claimed that a delegation sent by the party to meet the victims was not allowed to reach the village and was detained.
Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also attacked the BJP government, saying its bulldozer blinded by inhumanity has become a threat to sensitivity.
In a tweet, Priyanka Gandhi said, “No amount of condemnation is enough for the heart-wrenching incident in Kanpur.” “We all have to raise our voice against this inhumanity. The victim’s family should get justice and strict action be taken against the culprits,” she said in a tweet.
Congress state president Brijlal Khabri also condemned the incident, saying, “The BJP says something and does something. They say that bulldozer action will not be taken against the poor, but what has happened in Kanpur reveals their true character.”
Khabri also claimed that a Congress delegation, including himself and party leaders Nakul Dubey and Naseemuddin Siddiqui, were stopped from visiting the victim’s family.
“I don’t know why they stopped us. They seem to be hiding their failures,” he added.
Pramila Dixit and her 22-year-old daughter Shiva Dixit allegedly self-immolated after locking themselves in their thatched hut during an anti-encroachment drive at Madauli village in Kanpur Dehat district of Uttar Pradesh on Monday.

What CM said on demolition last year
On April 2022, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said, “If a poor person builds a house on government land by encroachment, then the administration will not remove it till a safe house is provided to them. There are arrangements for this… And if it is not in a reserved category, then it will not be demolished, but will be given on a lease at the same place.”
