Kannauj: Former block president arrested for bid to disrobe girl

An FIR was registered against Nawab Singh under Section 76 (assault or use of criminal force with the intent to disrobe) of IPC (Representative Image)A 48-year-old businessman and former block pramukh has been arrested in Uttar Pradesh’s Kannauj for allegedly attempting to disrobe a teenaged girl whom he had called on the pretext of arranging a job, police said.
The 15-year-old gsirl was accompanied by her aunt, who is in her 30s. Police reached the spot after receiving a call from the girl and arrested Singh, who officers said was found “partially clothed”.
The incident also triggered a political slugfest, with the ruling BJP claiming that the accused is a Samajwadi Party member with close ties to its senior SP leaders. However, the SP denied the allegations, saying that Nawab Singh is no longer affiliated with the party.
An FIR was registered against Singh under Section 76 (assault or use of criminal force with the intent to disrobe) of the IPC along with several sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
Singh was produced before a local court and sent to judicial custody.
