A 48-year-old businessman and former block pramukh has been arrested in Uttar Pradesh’s Kannauj for allegedly attempting to disrobe a teenaged girl whom he had called on the pretext of arranging a job, police said.

The 15-year-old gsirl was accompanied by her aunt, who is in her 30s. Police reached the spot after receiving a call from the girl and arrested Singh, who officers said was found “partially clothed”.

The incident also triggered a political slugfest, with the ruling BJP claiming that the accused is a Samajwadi Party member with close ties to its senior SP leaders. However, the SP denied the allegations, saying that Nawab Singh is no longer affiliated with the party.
