On a yet another surprise visit to the state,AICC general secretary Rahul Gandhi landed in Varanasi on Tuesday morning and went on a tour of villages in Naxal-affected Chandauli and Mirzapur districts of eastern UP.

Rahul Gandhi held chaupals and interacted with the villagers, asking them about their problems, implementation of Centrally funded schemes, especially MGNREGA and whether payments were made regularly to workers.

In Chandauli district,Rahul visited Kurthiya village and held a chaupal below a tree. Besides discussing their problems,he explained to them the importance of UID number and how it would remove corruption by ensuring that financial assistance under various Central schemes would directly reach the bank accounts of the beneficiaries. From Chandauli,he went to Manikpur and Dariyapur villages of Mirzapur and held similar chaupals.

His speeches were similar to the ones he had earlier made, but he also asked villagers whether they had heard of the Jan Lokpal Bill and what they thought about it.

Sources said Congress general secretary is likely to camp in the region for next two days and make a night halt in a village. Before starting his tour,Rahul Gandhi visited Sant Ravidas Janmasthan temple in Varanasi, spent time with the priests, sat in the “satsang” and also had meals. Rahul also wrote in the visitor’s book about his experience.
