The political and economic resolution of the Samajwadi Party that was presented on the inaugural day of its national convention on Wednesday urged the Supreme Court to reconsider its decisions, which have “far reaching consequences”.
Commenting on several orders of the judiciary, the resolution cited the example of police being not allowed to arrest a person under sections which have less than seven years of punishment. “It means if any goonda slaps PM, CM or any judge, he cannot be arrested,” SP leader Ram Gopal Yadav, who presented the resolution, said.
The resolution also raised fingers over the Supreme Court’s judgment on encounters. “It says that first murder case should be registered against the police. The blank cartridges should be deposited. Now, in these circumstances will police fire in Naxal-affected Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand. Will anyone give statement against criminals and how will the murderer get punishment?” asked the Rajya Sabha member.
The resolution also said that Governors should act within their constitutional limits and should not function as Chief Minister who is responsible to people.
Ram Gopal said that though constitutional posts like Governor should not be attacked directly, but their conduct is far from decorum.
“We have included it in our resolution to convey the feelings of our workers. We cannot say anything directly, but it is mentioned,” he added. The resolution also cited example of dismissal of NTR government in Andhra Pradesh and acts of Governors in Bihar, Jharkhand and other states.
SP’s national general secretary and Rajya Sabha MP Naresh Agrawal attacked UP Governor Ram Naik directly terming him as ‘RSS agent’. “The dialogue of Governor is like a RSS agent. He should not work like this as it is not the work of Governor. How did he know sitting inside Raj Bhavan that law and order situation is bad in the state,” Agrawal said.
The resolution also slammed PM Narendra Modi’s US visit saying that it was a routine visit to attend the UN function but the media “crossed the limits of sycophancy” by hyping the visit.
“We believe that the media should refrain from comparing Modi with tall leaders like Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi and Atal Bihari Vajpayee, as he is no match,” Ram Gopal said.
