Power distribution in Kanpur to be handed over to TPL,says govt
LUCKNOW: The state government ruled out the possibility of a rollback of its decision to hand over power distribution in Kanpur to private franchise Torrent Power Limited (TPL).
Replying to a discussion on power shortage in the Assembly during Zero Hour on Wednesday,Energy Minister Ramveer Upadhaya said the agreement with the TPL has been signed and the process is on to hand over power distribution of Kanpur to the private franchise.
The state-owned Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited had signed an MoU with TPL in May 2009 for handing over power distribution in Agra and Kanpur. The power distribution in Agra was handed over to TPL on April 1,but the process in Kanpur was delayed in the face of opposition from employees of the Kanpur Electricity Supply Company. Last month, the Power Employees Joint Action Committee had served a notice to hold a strike. Following this,UPPCL Chairman and Managing Director Navneet Sehgal had signed an agreement with the unions, assuring them that a recommendation will be made to the state government to cancel the agreement with TPL. ens

In Jhansi ravines, cops at doorstep to listen to people’s woes

KANPUR: In the remote villages of Jalaun, where once people lived under the shadow of dacoits like Arvind Gujjar,Nirbhay Gujjar and Salim Pehlwan, the police have taken the new role — that of a messenger. Under the ‘Police Janmitra Yojna’,the police teams will be visiting remote villages of the district twice a week and collect a list of complaints from the people residing there.

The villagers can tell any problem to the police, from incidents of crimes to complaints about lack of development or improper implementation of government projects. While complaints pertaining to crimes will be dealt by the police, the teams will forward other complaints to the concerned departments. “Despite the elimination of all the prominent dacoit gangs in Jalaun and neighbouring districts, the people in the area are reluctant to approach to the police. Through this project we aim to bridge the gap between villagers and police,” said Jalaun SP Prem Gautam.

Nearly 150 of the 600-odd villages under Jhansi Range are very difficult to access. ens
