Decision on degree college affiliations by May 12
The Uttar Pradesh government has directed the higher education department to finalise proposals of affiliation received from degree colleges in the state by next week. “Decision on all 600 proposals received from the degree colleges regarding affiliation should be taken up by May 12 and the regional higher education officers should examine the proposals,” Higher Education Minister Rakesh Dhar Tripathi said during a review meeting on Friday evening. He said the government was committed to set up degree colleges in 41 districts having low enrollment rates,and directed the department officials to identify land and submit proposals with the government. He directed the officials to complete the recruitment of teachers on 524 posts in various universities,including Lucknow and Gorakhpur. “It is the responsibility of the registrars to complete the recruitment process by the start of the next academic session,” Tripathi said.

Bar Association to buy batons,helmets
Farukkhabad: Close on the heels of a clash between police and lawyers in Kanpur,the District Bar Association on Saturday announced that it will purchase batons and helmets “to counter the use of force by police”. During a meeting yesterday,the Bar Association decided to purchase 500 batons and an equal number of helmets,Association general secretary Sanjeev Paria said,while adding that the decision was taken in the wake of police lathicharge on lawyers in Kanpur district a month ago.

Singer’s kin gets extortion call
BULANDSHAHR: The grandmother of Bollywood playback singer Sunidhi Chauhan has lodged a police complaint alleging that she has received a ransom call. The callers reportedly demanded Rs 50,000 from 75-year-old Bhoodevi and threatened her with dire consequences if she failed to pay up. SP (Rural) Babulal said Arniya Station House Officer has been directed to look into the matter.
