Alarm bells are ringing for the ruling BSP as the party has emerged a major loser in Lok Sabha elections with reference to the performance of parties in assembly segments.

The Congress has emerged as the big gainer. The BSP,which had wrested power from the Samajwadi Party in the 2007 assembly elections by winning 216 seats, now trails behind its traditional rival. It could maintain its lead only in 100 assembly segments in the 2009 Lok Sabha polls.

The SP,which had won 94 seats in the 2007 assembly polls, actually leads in 118 assembly segments in the 2009 Lok Sabha polls. Against its vote share of 8.84 per cent in the 2007 assembly polls, the Congress increased its share to 18.25 per cent in 2009 Lok Sabha polls.

In the 2007 assembly elections, the Congress had won 22 seats. It has improved its tally by maintaining its lead in 95 assembly segments. Even though the BSP maintained its lead in vote share, polling 27.52 per cent votes in 2009 LS polls,it won only 20 seats. In the 2007 assembly polls,it contested all 403 seats and won 206. Its candidates were runners-up in 109 constituencies. The vote share of the BSP in 2007 assembly election was 30.43 per cent, which dipped by three per cent to 27.52 per cent in the LS polls.

After engineering defections and winning the by-elections in last two years, the BSP tally in UP assembly now is 217. The BSP-led government was installed on May 13,2007. The BSP is concerned over the poll results. Addressing the party meeting on Tuesday,Chief Minister Mayawati said the BSP has emerged on top. Giving the break-up of seats, she said of the 80 Lok Sabha seats, the BSP won 21,its candidates were on second position in 50 seats and on number three at seven Lok Sabha seats.

The BJP,with a voteshare of 17.50 per cent, won 10 Lok Sabha seats. It has marginally increased its lead in 62 assembly segments. In the 2007 assembly elections, the BJP had won 51 seats.

With vote share of 23.26 per cent, the Samajwadi party won 23 seats and seven of its candidates won in all the segments of their respective LS constituencies.
