A group of five impostors, among them a woman, posing as officials of the Ministry of Home Affairs were arrested when they were trying to extort money from the staff of a private university in Moradabad on Thursday evening.
The police also seized a red-beaconed Maruti Swift from them. A police officer said the accused persons visited the Tirthankar Mahabir University in the pretext of conducting an inquiry. The man leading the group identified himself as a senior IAS officer.
The accused produced a fake letter to make the university authorities believe that they had come to inquire into allegations of hefty sum being collected from the students in the name of admission fee. The group was trying to coerce the owner of the university to cough up money if he wanted to get rid of the inquiry, said a police officer.
The staff, however, grew suspicious when they saw the signatory authority in the letter as principal secretary (home) while the MHA has no such post.
The Moradabad SP (City) SS Baghel said the same group had recently extorted Rs 80,000 from a leading doctor in Bulandshahr.
